Day 322

"10 years or 1 hour. Those are the two time frames worth prioritizing.

10 years is shorthand for thinking longer-term than nearly everyone else and doing things that are really ambitious or meaningful. Most of the deeply meaningful things in life require long time horizons: building a business, cultivating a happy marriage, growing a family, getting in the best shape of your life, etc.

How do you work toward the 10-year things? In 1 hour increments. 1 hour is shorthand for doing things that can be accomplished from start to finish in a single session like a good workout, a good writing session, reading a chapter of a book, going on a fun date, etc. The key is that you finish with something accomplished, not with half-work still waiting to be completed.

If you spend 1 hour working toward a 10-year project—and you repeat this day after day—you’re going to end up living a lovely life."

I love this quote!

"Making a choice that is 1 percent better or 1 percent worse seems insignificant in the moment, but over the span of moments that make up a lifetime these choices determine the difference between who you are and who you could be. Success is the product of daily habits—not once-in-a-lifetime transformations."

Nice one, man. Not dissimilar to your one a few days back about how new good habits need to be part of our identity to count.

Yes, the book is a goldmine of useful thoughts when it comes to this stuff.

Best.

You all have a great porn-free weekend.

"The purpose of setting goals is to win the game. The purpose of building systems is to continue playing the game. True long-term thinking is goal-less thinking. It’s not about any single accomplishment. It is about the cycle of endless refinement and continuous improvement. Ultimately, it is your commitment to the process that will determine your progress."

Keep up the good work, man. Not too far away from 1 year. Damn, 1 year man! That's a serious progress, no joke. I mean, I know you've been there before but it's not a guarantee and it's not easy. Any time it happens it's nonetheless an amazing achievement.

Thanks brother! Now is definitely the time to stay on the straight and narrow, but I do feel pretty good at this point. One day at a time.

Best.

Damn not that far off from the 1yr mark! Awesome to see this brother

It's been an amazing year for you man, getting nearly 1yr porn-free and getting down to 18% body fat. Very happy for you!
Thanks man, it's feeling pretty sweet at the moment. I officially saw 19.0% today, so I'm real close to my goal but we'll see if I actually get to 18.9% or whatever by Thanksgiving, but at this point I'm happy with my results.

I've incorporated something this last week from Atomic Habits which has had interesting results. In my last reading he mentioned specifying certain tasks for certain digital devices only, thus, funny enough, I decided to check RN only on my computer from now on and not use my phone anymore. This has been great but has definitely thrown me off. I didn't realize how many random moments throughout the day I would check up on RN. I guess it was a weird compulsive habit of mine. See I told you guys I'm compulsive! Anyway, without doing that anymore, my reading time has been dramatically improved with more focus. I talk with my girl with more concentration, and when I stretch I decided to use that time to actually breathe and not look at my phone (imagine that).

You all have a great porn-free Monday.

"Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity. This is one reason why meaningful change does not require radical change. Small habits can make a meaningful difference by providing evidence of a new identity. And if a change is meaningful, it is actually big. That's the paradox of making small improvements."

Day 328

Instead of focusing on quitting we should rather focus on becoming.

A wiseman once asked a porn addict (for that is what he called himself) how he would create the perfect painting, for creating a modern masterpiece is every man's dream.

The porn addict said "I suppose I would have to find the perfect inspiration first. A one click answer for my question, how to be a perfect painter would be my first question. Then I would need a perfect streak of painting (that is, days in a row) to create this masterpiece. Any interruption in my painting streak would mean utter failure on my part. A real man should be able to have one continuous streak in painting. Unfortunately, I can't just click a button and have this painting instantly accomplished, because of society, my shit parents and my particular bad situation, because otherwise it would be. For it is well known that every masterpiece, whether from DaVinci or Monet were accomplished instantly. To be honest, just the thought of this goal makes me very anxious."

Then the wisemen asked a grizzly old painter from Italy how he would paint his masterpiece.

The old painter replied "I suppose with one stroke at a time."

"It is easy to get bogged down trying to find the optimal plan for change: the fastest way to lose weight, the best program to build muscle, the perfect idea for a side hustle. We are so focused on figuring out the best approach that we never get around to taking action. As Voltaire once wrote, ‘The best is the enemy of the good.'"

Two more days till eleven months.

I'm going through one of the long schlong phases of recovery too. Always a pleasure.

Amazing work brother.

Have a great porn free weekend!
Thank you, friend.

Have a great porn-free weekend yourself!

"All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. But as that decision is repeated, a habit sprouts and grows stronger. Roots entrench themselves and branches grow. The task of breaking a bad habit is like uprooting a powerful oak within us. And the task of building a good habit is like cultivating a delicate flower one day at a time."

Day 333

Cannot believe we are near the end of 2024 man, time really flies by! Any plans for December or for the new year you're thinking about?
Yes, it sure does fly by.

Nothing too crazy. Since Thanksgiving I've been working on eating at a maintenance calorie intake and because I have more energy at the moment, I'll be working out pretty hard the next few weeks. It's really nice to have more energy and I forget what that extra boost can give you during a workout. It was fun letting loose a little over last week, especially on Thursday (even drank a little more wine than usual) but I tell you what, both of us are ready to get back to our normal eating/drinking habits. It's nice to feel that difference where we've made a substantial enough change in our habits when it comes to eating and drinking, that now it's only fun for so long and then you want to go back to your normal habits. I like that very much.

Also, tomorrow is eleven months!

Best brother.
