Newcomer here: Publicly committing to Rebooting

Hi everyone,

I wanted to leverage this platform and the human being's own psychological tendencies to help me quit PORN/UNHEALTHY MASTURBATION/PIXEL URGE. By posting this (albeit anonymously), I want to announce to the world that I am addicted to masturbation and it is causing me problems, I hope the day comes when I have the courage to post this under my real name.

This platform, as I understand it, can help in quitting masturbation because of psychology, specifically leveraging on human's:
- Social Proof Tendency: My reputation is on the line here, in times of doubt and urge, I want to look towards a community facing the same problems as me and get advice
- Association Tendency: I want to associate myself with a bunch of ambitious and talented individuals of Reboot Nation all wanting to improve themselves
- Commitment & Consistency Bias: I'm hoping that once I have committed to quitting masturbation, I will stick to it for the mere reason that I have publicly announced my intention to do so. I will also be reporting my journey from time to time.

My story
25-year-old male. Typical of any male my age, I grew up with the internet and Porn from the ages of 11,12. I started masturbating when I was 13, and it became a daily habit ever since. No issues for the longest period as I didn't have a girlfriend and wasn't really addicted to it, I had plenty of friends, both male, and female, and had normal interactions with them.

Fast forward to when I was in university, and had a long-distance relationship with my girlfriend (GF). We lost our virginity together at 21, it wasn't great but hey whose first time was it anyway? In 2020, when Covid hit, when everything was in lockdown mode and I was thousands of miles away from my GF, I started to really ramp up the masturbation numbers. Averaging 2,3 times a day, and this has been going on till now (2023).

When I closed the distance and reunited with my girlfriend (2021) and tried having sex, I found that it wasn't enjoyable. Why? I have come to believe that it is due to porn. Porn and real-life sex are just so different, sex is intimate, and the distracting thoughts I have during sex aren't helpful at all.

Since 2022, I have also had a mild case of PIED, sex fails about half the time due to my dick not being hard enough, or it was hard enough just not for a duration that is conducive to sex (hard for 5~10 minutes). Having read Your Brain on Porn, I have diagnosed the problems as follows:
- Dick not hard enough (likely from masturbating too much, yes, I have tried stopping a few days and even a 2,3 day hiatus leads to a much harder erection)
- Brain is always distracted (unrealistic porn scenes, other girls)
- Mild case of death grip: In 2021, I wasn't really "feeling it" during sex, I thought it was death grip and changed my masturbation habits a little. I used my left hand more and loosened the grip, it works! But the issue isn't completely cured
- Not knowing what sex is really like: This may sound odd, but it is my belief that Internet and Porn has really ruined what the ideal sex is like. I want to have a complete reboot from Porn and start from the ground up sexually as any teenager would. From holding hands > making out > touching/oral > full on sex > wilder kinks

My plan
Having had my little rant, I plan to drastically:
- Cut down the masturbation numbers, would love to go completely cold turkey but not confident that I'll be able to do so. Open to suggestions here
- Dopamine refresh: masturbate without porn or pictures

Thanks for reading this lame ass post, I will still be exploring the site and figuring out the best way to quit PMO.

Welcome, Nodetator. This forum will certainly help you out with quitting porn and recovering.

My advice: if you want a complete reboot, you need to take 90 days without sex or masturbation. That's the basic blueprint for every reboot to start the healing and recovery process. It's easier said than done, but I can speak from experience: cutting down on MO won't be as effective as doing that 90 days. If you haven't already, check out the Basics of Rebooting page on this site. Good luck!

In my personal opinion and experience so far, continuing to masterbate while avoiding any additional stimulation has been key, at least for me. NoFap was too much suppression for me, and allowing myself to learn how to masterbate without porn is really helping. The difference after a few weeks has been kind of mind-blowing. I’m just a few weeks in, but thought it’s worth the feedback on that point. I’d failed at NoFap many times before, but this is already much much different with a much better outlook!

What do you mean by avoiding additional stimulation? Is it just masturbation with just the hand sensations without porn/fantasizing?
