Psychology article refutes PIED theroy

Did a Google search on PIED and found this psychology article (link below) by Dr. David Ley titled "An Erectile Dysfunction Myth" which seems to refute the concept of relating extended porn use to the inability to gain full or partial erections with human partners rather than pornography. The article is from August 2013.

Gary Wilson had a great reply in the comments section, but the author Dr. Ley does make some interesting points.

I take ADHD medication and I'm not overweight but I'm not in great physical shape either, so I can't help wondering if these may be causes to what's going on downstairs? Or even stress? The human body does seem to be one of those things where one issue can have hundreds of different possible causes.

What are everyone's thoughts on this? I don't believe in the article myself, but it's good to keep up a critical discussion on our own theories.

I think it is certainly possible that the cause of ED in any particular person, even one who uses porn, might not be porn-related.  ED in some instances could be the product of other problems.  To put it simply, just because porn can cause ED, does not mean all cases of ED among porn users are caused by porn.

That being said, I think the notion that porn does not induce ED or cause ED issues in any men or in many men is absolutely absurd.  The evidence (call it anecdotal or whatever you want to call it) seems overwhelming to me.  We are seeing too many men, particularly young men, with ED symptoms where the only common factor seems to be extensive consumption of porn.  And we see too many instances where eliminating porn cures ED.

I don't know what the motivations of the author might be, but I think Steam rolled called in correctly.

Totally.  Antidepressants are a huge cause of ED.

I dunno ... even if the concept of nofap / PIED is all disproven at some point in the future, at least its placebo effect has given me a lot of hope and confidence that I wouldn't otherwise have, and sometimes that's all it takes.

Total bullshit.. the easiest test in the world is this one.. I read this on your brain on porn.com
Masturbate just using touch..
Then masturbate to your favorite porn..
What happens??. If you can get it up to just touch then it's anxiety related.
If you can't get it up to number one but you dick gets really hard and fast to only number two.. well guess what.. you got it.. it's the porn..
That's test couldn't be more clear to me..

Thanks for sharing this with us and it's exactly as you say. Whether you agree with the article or not, it is important to be critical of your own position.

So let's get right into it. Dr. Ley seems to say there are better or rather actual explanations for ED in young men:
Mialon, et al., found that young men?s erectile dysfunction was linked to use of medication without a prescription, to a low level of sexual experience, and to both mental and physical health. Tobacco use, alcohol use and drug use were also significant predictors.
I've never regularly taken medication and never without a prescription, I'm in good mental and physical health (vegan diet, have never been overweight), I've never smoked and never taken narcotics even once. I've only been drunk once in my life and drink occasionally at best.

However under this list, I have to say the one thing that does apply to me is the whole "low level of sexual experience". It is possible that this can be a cause or an accomplice to the problem of my ED. In fact I totally agree that it is. My ED problems are two fold: Not only to desensitize myself to porn, but to sensitize myself to real people. This means getting actual sexual experience with physical encounters, but obviously when one is used to PMO that experience is not easy to come by.

In short I don't know why Dr. Ley's list of alternate causes can't also be a part of the problem along with porn rather than exclusively the problem.

There is a lot more to say about this but I don't want to get into all the details right now.

I have low level of sexual experience and also Im almost constantly stressed and feel depressed. Maybe thats my root cause idk, but i still think porn played a huge role in it
