So above is posted a link to a talk by Johann Hari, a guy who has taken a closer look at addiction, the causes and what elements have been missed over the years when dealing with addiction. Before I write anything, I would like to state that you don't have to have a predisposition to addiction to become a porn addict which the above video may leave you wondering.

The important bits of the talk that I would like to highlight revolve around the solutions to addiction. I believe in the case of porn, people overusing generally did so because they enjoyed watching it and didn't know it was harmful, this led them to a weaker response to everyday pleasures and less drive for life. Time and time again we see people talking about how much they enjoy everyday pleasures once they have given up porn. I think having an addiction undoubtedly negatively impacts a lot of peoples potentials to form strong relationships with others and society. So often its the case that people enjoy 'getting out more once they give up porn'. They study that Johann refers to in which rats that were given the option to take heroin but lived in 'rat paradise' decided not to use it whereas rats which had less enjoyable lives would binge often till death. This points us in one direction, create a better environment for yourself to live in, full of natural pleasures and fun social interactions and you may find you are less likely to become inclined to binge in porn and relapse.

Reflecting on my own experience and that of people I know; it is the times in which you are sat at home bored with nothing to look forward too that will cause a relapse. If you create a life that is full of meaningful relationships which has a future that you are invested in then you may be bored and at home but you won't relapse, because you have something more worthwhile. Get outside and exercise or hit the gym! Learn a new skill! Meditate! Give your life some structure and some discipline in which you can gain confidence!

{Also as I'm a big advocate for the meditation side of things, if you are curious about meditation then a couple of cool resources are Headspace: an app and Andy Puddicombe's TED talk on mindfulness. Also a good book to read which explains the potential benefits of being mindful is called 'The Plastic Mind'.}

Hope this has helped at least once person, comments welcome.
